THE DRS2016 CONVERSATIONS
SEARCH CONVERSATIONS
The Conversation format at DRS2016 sought to engage attendees in open exchange in arriving at new understandings about a topic. The ambitions of the format are:
- to provide an environment where a constructive dialogue can take place about issues of importance in Design Research, particularly to promote exchanges about topics not easily captured by the scholarly paper;
- to foster open exchange, by talking, but also by means of play, prototyping, critique of each others' work produced on-the-spot, or even activism;
- to welcome exchanges across stakeholders such as researchers, practitioners and other design stakeholders.
Twenty Conversations sessions were held at DRS2016, facilitated by catalysts. Some comments from delegates during the conference:
“The Conversations are really refreshing, not as tiring as the paper presentations.”
“It’s great to be able to talk and have exchanges about real topics.”
“At first people are a little apprehensive to contribute - which then makes way for engagement during the session.”

Below, some of the Conversations are documented with reports of what happened during the session, some of which contain links for continued discussion in other channels. Some sessions were not documented post-conference but you can still find the original proposals of those below. The sessions are also listed in the full conference programme.
It was a pleasure to chair this format at the DRS2016 conference. I hope the Conversations format will grow, evolve and invigorate discourse in design and design research.
